The AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9985WX is a 64-core workstation processor for users whose workloads need extreme parallel processing, huge memory bandwidth and far more PCIe expansion than a mainstream desktop platform can provide. It is aimed at professional rendering, simulation, engineering, code compilation, AI development and other applications that scale across large numbers of CPU cores.
The Zen 5 processor provides 64 cores and 128 threads, with a 3.2GHz base clock and boost frequency up to 5.4GHz. A 256MB L3 cache supports large working datasets, while the 350W TDP reflects the performance class of the platform and the need for serious workstation cooling.
The 9985WX uses AMD's sTR5 socket and supports WRX90, TRX50 and Pro 695 platforms. Eight-channel DDR5 RDIMM memory runs at up to 6400 MT/s with ECC enabled, giving memory-intensive professional applications considerably more bandwidth and capacity options than consumer desktop systems.
PCIe 5.0 connectivity is equally important. The processor platform exposes up to 148 native lanes, including up to 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes, making it suitable for multiple professional GPUs, accelerator cards and large NVMe storage arrays.
No cooler is included with the processor. A workstation-class sTR5 thermal solution, suitable motherboard, strong power supply and chassis airflow should be treated as part of the platform cost. For workloads that can genuinely use 64 cores, the 9985WX is designed to remove the CPU and I/O limits found on ordinary desktop systems.
